How We Met
During the summer of 2001, Dave was working with Elizabeth’s mom, Elaine. They became friends and enjoyed many toaster sandwiches. Elaine gave Elizabeth and Dave each other’s email addresses, and they spent a few weeks sending each other notes. They decided to meet in person, with a few friends, for a Rangers game versus the Anaheim Angels on September 22, 2001. Neither remembers whether the Rangers won that night, but they do remember sharing a hug and phone numbers.
The next weekend, they went out for dinner alone. When Dave showed up at Elizabeth’s apartment to pick her up, he didn’t bring flowers or chocolate, but he did bring her the new Cake CD. Those who know Elizabeth well understand why the two have been inseparable ever since.
The Proposal
Dave and Elizabeth were back home in Texas for two weeks of summer vacation, and made plans before they left Chicago to play golf early in the morning on Saturday June 28th, 2008 -- Dave's 30th birthday. It was a typical round for them: Dave’s drives get better with each hole as he warms up; Elizabeth gets there respectably, then can’t putt to save her life; until they got to the 18th green. Dave's Best Man and Engagement Ninja, Dallas, had picked up the ring from the Watsons’ house the night before and had been in constant text message communication with Dave throughout the morning.
After the last group before them had played through 18, Dallas walked out to the green and put the ring into the hole. A small group of spectators was hanging around at the edge of the clubhouse watching the couple, since the manager of the course had been in on it since Dave called a week before. Elizabeth was so self-conscious that she didn’t even make that last putt, and as she started to walk back to the cart, Dave said, “hey, look… there’s something in the hole!” When Elizabeth turned around to look, Dave was down on one knee with a gorgeous ring. He asked her to spend the rest of her life with him.
She eventually said yes (after she stood there for a while with her hands over her mouth in total shock), and the crowd applauded and honked the horns on their carts.
